Best Practices for Creating an Inclusive School Environment

LGBTQ children and adolescents are at high risk for negative social, emotional, and academic outcomes. This webinar, designed for school personnel, private clinicians, and community professionals, will discuss how best to support our LGBTQ students within the academic setting with a specific emphasis on working with our transgender and nonbinary students. Current research and terminology will be presented and federal and state laws supporting LGBTQ students in the school setting will be discussed. Attendees will learn how to accommodate transgender students while creating a more inclusive school environment. Finally, best practices for working with LGBTQ students and their families will be presented.

Objectives:
1. Review current research, terminology, policies and laws focused on LGBTQ individuals
with a specific focus on LBGTQ students in the academic setting.
2. Understand how to accommodate transgender students while creating an inclusive and
safe school environment.
3. Discuss best practices on how to support LGBTQ students and their families.

Dr. Michelle (Shelley) Fisher earned her Bachelor’s degree from James Madison University and her Master’s degree in Social Work from Boston College.  She received her Doctorate in Social Work from George Williams College where she focused on LGB and transgender adolescents.  Dr. Fisher’s 25-year social work career includes child protective services, adoption, medical and forensic social work, teaching, private practice and for the past 10 years, school social work.
