Summary:

Harm reduction refers to a set of compassionate and pragmatic approaches that aim to reduce substance-related problems and improve quality of life without emphasizing sobriety or a reduction in use. Typically, when we think of harm reduction approaches, we tie it to illicit drug use such as heroin use. These concepts can also be beneficial to clients living with an alcohol use disorder.  The focus of treatment is on diminishing heavy drinking occasions and the consequences that typically come from them. Abstinence can be the goal, but these concepts can be applied to elicit motivation and reduce harm.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will develop a greater understanding of harm reduction principles and how this can be applied towards assisting others with Alcohol Use Disorder.
  2. Long standing resistance and stigma towards harm reduction approaches as it relates to alcohol use disorder will be explored. Participants will learn concepts that negate this resistance.
  3. Participants will learn techniques to assist clients in approaching recovery from a harm reduction approach and how to incorporate these concepts into their lives.
