Description:

This training presents an introduction to AutPlay Therapy, an integrative family play therapy framework to working with neurodivergent children. The neurodiversity paradigm, movement and being neurodiversity affirming will be covered. The phases of therapy, common mental health needs, and parent involvement will be covered. Several play therapy interventions and reflective exercises designed for affirmingly addressing the mental health needs neurodivergent children will also be presented through experiential participation, session clips, and case examples.

Learning Objectives:

1) Identify the components of AutPlay Therapy including the phases of therapy and parent/family involvement.
2) Outline the theoretical underpinnings of AutPlay Therapy including integration of various play therapy theories and approaches.
3) Demonstrate the assessment process in AutPlay Therapy that can be used to help identify neurodivergent needs.
4) Identify play strengths and differences and how to structure effective play therapy interventions for autistic and neurodivergent children.
5) Explain what neurodiversity (and neurodiversity affirming) means in play therapy.
6) List several play therapy interventions used in AutPlay Therapy to address the needs of autistic and neurodivergent children.

Presenter:
Tracy Turner-Bumberry LPC, RPT-S
Tracy is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor at her private practice, Seva Counseling LLC, in Milledgeville Georgia. Prior to private practice, Tracy was an elementary school counselor, and worked as a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor in a children’s psychiatric hospital. In addition to private practice, Tracy is a national speaker and author of several books relating to Play Therapy topics. Tracy is a Certified Animal Assisted Play Therapist, and often brings her Certified Therapy Dog Carly to client sessions. Carly has been an important piece of her therapy practice, providing a great deal of comfort to her clients. Tracy is also a Dialectical Behavior Therapy practitioner, and incorporates many DBT techniques into Play Therapy sessions. Although Tracy works with clients of all ages, she specializes in young adult to older adult clients who have recently discovered they are/may be neurodivergent. She is knowledgable in the IEP/504 process, and works closely with parents to ensure their child’s educational needs are being addressed. Tracy works with neurodivergent children as well, incorporating Play Therapy; AutPlay Therapy specifically into her client sessions.
