Description:

Communication differences go hand-in-hand with autism and can be a difficult barrier for service providers to overcome when supporting people with autism. This training focuses on understanding how autism can impact communication skills and styles, providing practical strategies for supporting the communication of clients in direct services, and ultimately boosting participants’ confidence in their ability to serve clients with autism who present with communication differences.

Objectives: 

  1. Participants will gain knowledge regarding potential impacts of autism on communication
  2. Participants will gain useful strategies for supporting their clients’ communication skills
  3. Participants will gain confidence in their ability to serve people with autism

Presenter: 

Dan Bressler, MT-BC, works as an educational advocate in the Autism Resource Center at Options & Advocacy for McHenry County. This work involves supporting parents and school-based professionals in understanding and implementing special education law as well as collaborating with IEP teams in developing strategies to support students with autism in the classroom environment. As a board-certified music therapist, he has worked directly with children and young adults, including those impacted by autism and emotional/behavioral needs, in a variety of contexts including clinic- and school-based environments. Dan has a passion for promoting neurodiversity by providing support at the individual, practitioner, and systems levels to increase inclusion in schools and communities.
