Program Description:

This program will provide an overview of gambling disorder for counselors at local addictions treatment programs preparing to screen all clients for gambling disorder, and other helping professionals who work with the community. Attendees will be able to: identify signs and symptoms of gambling disorder, distinguish between responsible and problem gambling, list risk factors and consequences of problem gambling, understand various screening instruments available, and identify resources to help those affected by problem gambling. The presentation will utilize a web-based presentation format covering the following, with a 2.5 hour duration including two 10 minute breaks.

Presenter:

Elizabeth Thielen is a Senior Director at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services with over 20 years in the addictions field. A Licensed Professional Counselor and Problem and Compulsive Gambling Counselor, Elizabeth is passionate about increasing awareness of gambling disorder in the community and among helping professionals. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling, and is the Nicasa representative to the Illinois Alliance on Problem Gambling. Elizabeth is also an adjunct faculty at the College of Lake County, where she teaches about process addictions. A former amateur athlete, Elizabeth is particularly committed to helping athletes avoid disordered gambling as our state recently expanded gambling opportunities to include legalized sports betting.
