Alcoholism in the home can be a traumatic event for children according to the ACES survey. Explore what this impact looks like both during childhood and adulthood. The objectives include understanding the relationship between alcoholism in the home and ACES scores, how children from homes with alcoholism manage as adults, and lastly, understanding treatment options and resources available in McHenry County.

Presenters:

Laurie Crain has worked in the prevention field since 2002. Currently, she is the Drug Free Community Grant Coordinator for the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition. She is a graduate of Rockford University and has also completed the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America cohort training. She has presented on many different topics, both locally and nationally, including drug specific education, media and marketing impact, establishing county-wide initiatives, marijuana policy/local ordinance, and coalition development. At the state and federal level Laurie serves as a peer-reviewer for grant funding and is also part of the Illinois Opioid Advisory Education workgroup. Locally, she is involved in the Family Violence Coordinating Council, Suicide Prevention Task Force, QPR (suicide awareness trainer), Leadership Greater McHenry County, McHenry County ACES Team, Community Connection for Youth, and served on the Woodstock Cultural Diversity and Social Awareness Commission. Her work in social issues has led to the following recognitions: Vision of Hope Recipient, 200; McHenry County Woman of Distinction, 2019; Leadership Greater McHenry County Distinguished Alumni, 2018 and Woodstock Professional & Business Women, 2013 Woman of the Year.

Chris Gleason is the Chief Executive Officer at Northern Illinois Recovery Center where he leads all aspects of the business. Chris has a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Judson University, a Master’s degree from Argosy University in Community Counseling, and is a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He has held numerous leadership position over the past 25 years in the field and has worked in all levels of substance abuse and mental health treatment. Chris co-led a team of therapists recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) receiving the SAMHSA Science to Service Award in 2010 for co-occurring treatment for adolescents. Chris is a sought-after presenter on co-occurring, opiates, and community integration, where he has spoken at the local, state, and national levels. He is also an adjunct professor at Aurora University in the School of Social Work with a focus on substance use and co-occurring. He practices a servant leadership approach with a recovery focus, as he has been sober for over 30 years and believes in the power of the human spirit to change. He has also helped companies transform their service models, increase revenue, and help put in place sustainable systems.

Rev. Paul White is the pastor of The Church of Holy Apostles in McHenry. He was the past chair of the National Catholic Coucil on Alcoholism and presently sits on the Rockford Diocese Health Board. Fr. Paul has served as a priest in 6 parishes over 31 years and has spoken on the topic of alcoholism in several forums for the past 33 years.
